Grammy Associated Artist Kris Myers began playing drums for progressive-jam-rock band Umphrey’s McGee in 2003 following the departure of original drummer Mike Mirro. With Myers at the helm, Umphrey’s has released 15 studio releases, virtually thousands of live releases, and has maintained a rigorous touring schedule for 22 years.
Additionally, Kris was involved in various side projects during his UM career, including Digital Tape Machine, collaborations with Brain Damaged Eggmen, Ohmphrey(featuring Chris Poland from Megadeth), Mike Keneally (Frank Zappa, Devin Townsend), Everyone Orchestra, the Chicago-based funk-fusion band Kick the Cat, and John McLean, to name a few. Kris was also integrated into the music licensing world as a co-writer, co-owner, and executive producer of Goodnight Nurse Publishing.
Myers has been featured in various music publications, including Modern Drummer, Relix, and Rolling Stone Magazine, and was honored with the title of Best Jam Band Drummer by DRUM Magazine in 2011. In 2018, Myers was featured on the cover of Modern Drummer’s July issue. Myers placed second in the Experimental Rock category of the publication’s “Readers Poll Awards” behind St. Vincent drummer Matt Johnson.
Recently, Kris has made a shift in his career path and has announced his departure from Umphrey’s McGee to pursue new musical ventures. As a current Nashville resident, he plans to continue his involvement with recording sessions, live touring opportunities, and charity events, both nationwide and abroad. He continues to work with artists such as Mike Keneally, Bill Evans, Jeff Coffin, Adrian Belew, and various other artists from the Zappa alumni.
